About UsThe Buckley Tutoring Program and the Enumclaw + Black Diamond Tutoring Program are pilot programs for Village Tutors, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, whose purpose is to help communities around the globe establish and run community-based tutoring programs that are free to all students in all subjects. The program was conceived by Walt Bennett, Founder and CEO of Village Tutors, Inc., and a group of Enumclaw leaders who desired to support and supplement the district resources with an all-volunteer public tutoring program. Mr. Bennett has a master's degree in education, and has developed the program in support of the Enumclaw School District's existing curriculum, with a particular emphasis on science and math. Buckley Tutors is administrated in part by an advisory team made up of representatives from Village Tutors, Buckley Kiwanis Club, Buckley Youth Activity Center, Buckley Chamber of Commerce, White River School District, and White River Hometowns Endowment. The program is completely community-supported and driven, but tied to the school district. Volunteer tutors go through background checks, receive training with district leaders, and are asked to make an eight-week commitment to provide consistency in the program and to build relationships with students. Copies of the district curriculum are available at each of the centers to help tutors help students. The tutoring centers are set up in a coffee-house style to provide a comfortable learning environment with refreshments, and each also features a computer lab with Internet access. With a commitment to make tutoring available to students 24/7, Buckley Tutors also has created a portal from its website to a virtual campus, and supports email communication between students and tutors. Buckley Tutors also offers volunteer tutors to staff the White River School District's after-school Extended Learning Program, which launched in Fall 2007. The program is designed to support schools and teachers, as well as students. You may view or print a copy of the community poster or program brochure (in English or Spanish). An impressive number of local and regional businesses have come forward to sponsor the program. Future funding will continue to come from sponsorship, individual and private contributors, and grant money. As Buckley Tutors increases its volunteers and resources, the program aims to reach thousands of students in the district.
